The difference between "CHYBA" and "OMYL"

"CHYBA" is more general than "OMYL" – "OMYL" is one of the meanings of "CHYBA".

1. mistake, error
1. Vařila jsem polévku a omylem jsem místo soli použila cukr. (I was making soup and used salt instead of sugar by mistake.)
2. Jsi na omylu! Václav Havel už není prezident. (You’re wrong / mistaken! Václav Havel isn’t a president anymore.)
2. when you dial the wrong number, you say:
1. Promiňte, to je omyl! – Sorry, wrong number!
3. no way (coll.)
1. Půjčíš mi svoje auto? – Ani omylem. Minule jsi ho odřela! (Will you lend me your car? – No way. You scratched it last time!

CHYBA

1. something wrong – in a language (spelling, typing, translating, …)
1. Tvoje esej bohužel není bez chyby. Udělal jsi tam pět chyb, oprav je. (Unfortunatelly, your essay is not without mistakes. You made five mistakes. Correct them.)
2. početní chyba (miscalculation), průměrná chyba (average error), …
3. = omyl: udělat chybu (make a mistake / error), přiznat chybu (admit one’s mistake), poučit se ze svých chyb (learn from one’s mistakes)
4. Ty mě na letiště neodvezeš? Ale slíbil jsi to! – No jo, sliby chyby. (You’re not going to take me to the airport? But you promised! – You know, they were justempty promises.)
2. fault, weakness, shortcoming, flaw, …(= vada)
1. Nikdo není bez chyby. (Nobody’s perfect.)
2. To nemá chybu! (It’s superb!)
3. fault (= vina)
1. Jdeme pozdě a je to tvoje vina. Vždycky ti všechno tak dlouho trvá! (We’re late and it’s your fault. Everything’s always taking you ages!)
